THE ”BIG LIGHTS” ON KONTIOLAHTI BIATHLON STADIUM

Since there seems to be a great interest and different information on the powerfull lights used in this event, I would like to bring out some background information about the matter.

Project manager Esa Haapala called me in the beginning of October and asked me to suggest a solution to improve the lighting in the stadium area, because the solution offered by Insinööritoimisto Osmo Väistö couldn't be carried out in a tight schedule.

I contacted the CEO of Angel Films Oy, Henrik Paersch, and we discussed different possibilities of carrying out the system.
After that, we visited Kontiolahti, where we familiarized ourselves with the stadium area and the tracks.

Paersch made a suggestion that we acquire a few high-power (100kW) lights and raise them up with cranes to approximately 25 metres altitude.

Electric power (380V / 3-phase feed, 265 A) would be needed to each light. It should be arranged with either fixed power feed or aggregates (reserve power appliance).

In the meeting on 10th October 2007, attended by:

Esa Haapala Project manager, Kontiolahti Sport Club
Ari Markkanen Municipality of Kontiolahti
Juha Pitkänen Municipality of Kontiolahti
Lauri Penttinen North Karelia College
Heimo Koskela LOC
Osmo Väistö Insinööritoimisto Väistö
Henrik Paersch Angel Films Oy
Markku Matikainen LOC / TV coordinator

We decided to call Paersch (Angel Films Oy) and three other companies for offer to carry out the lighting system.

No other offers were received, so the one received from Angel Films Oy was taken up.

The lights were brought from Sweden. In Nordic countries there are three for leasing, and in Finland they are leased by Angel Films Oy. (See also www.biathlonworld.com/eng/news)

Mr Pauli Kilpeläinen was asked to attend to the arrangements for power feed. Pohjois-Karjalan Sähkö company and electrician students from North Karelia College assisted in connections and cabling.

Cranes were provided by Jokiväri Oy. The company also provided the crane operator for the duration.

The main responsibility for constructing track lights and other additional lights was carried by event organization workers as well as North Karelia College students supervised by Lauri Penttinen and Osmo Väistö.

The work still goes on to satisfy the needs of the Host Broadcaster.

The expenses of the fixed lighting were covered by Kontiolahti Sport Club and Municipality of Kontiolahti based on the funding decision made in the municipal council.

LOC covers the expenses of the ”big lights” in the stadium area.
